'Run the Pointe' to be part of North-South celebration weekend
The Grosse Pointe South Athletic Booster Club will host “Run the Pointe” on Sept. 24, following the North South Tailgate and Taste of Grosse Pointe and is a part of the community celebration “Live. Play. Stay. A Weekend in Grosse Pointe.” The run features a 10K and 5K run or 2 mile walk for student-athletes, teachers, coaches, board members, elected officials and anyone else. Funds raised will support all of Grosse Pointe South athletic teams.

Congratulations to the Juggernauts, champions in Royal Oak tournament
Another Little League triumph this weekend, as the Grosse Pointe Farms/City 11u Juggernauts were crowned Champions of the Royal Oak 14th Annual Invitational Tournament Sunday (Aug. 7). The Juggernauts defeated the SF Athletics (Cleveland, Ohio) 8 - 5 in the championship game. Strong pitching from Elijah Sterin (win) and Jack Doerer (save) paved the way. Key hits from Micheal Rivard, Stevie Cavera and David Scupholm sparked the offense for an early lead.

Grosse Pointe South rower Chrumka makes it official, opts for Stanford
Grosse Pointe South High School senior rowing phenomenon Alix Chrumka officially signed with Stanford University this week, capping a recruiting drive that had her courted by schools from coast to coast, including the Ivy League and the Universities of Michigan and Virginia. Chrumka chose Stanford not only for its nationally competitive rowing program, but also for its strength in her chosen academic field of biomedical research.

Detroit Boat Club Crew's indoors end with a boatload of medals
The Detroit Boat Club Crew completed its indoor winter season winning 16 medals at the Grosse Ile Island Sprints. The team also competed in two other indoor regattas, the Cincinnati Indoor Championships and hosted their own competition dubbed “Motown Madness” in February.

South sophomore wins national title at track indoors; first in school history
Grosse Pointe South sophomore Hannah Meier won the national championship in the one-mile run last weekend at the New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York City. Her twin sister Haley finished 17th in the same event.
The two qualified for the meet by finishing 1-2 in the Michigan state indoor championship meet, where Hannah set a new state record. Both are also two-time All-State cross country runners. The New York meet was against the top 27 milers in the nation, according to their coach, Steve Zaranek.

Still iced in, but Detroit Boat Club will start its crew season Saturday
The water will have to wait a few weeks, but Grosse Pointe teens will be among those launching the Detroit Boat Club's 173rd year as the rowing team begins its 2011 campaign Saturday (Feb. 5) at their annual Motown Madness Indoor Rowing Competition at the boathouse on Belle Isle.
The 2011 crew includes students from Grosse Pointe South and North High Schools, Brownell Middle School, University of Detroit Jesuit High School, Mercy High School, Detroit Country Day and Birmingham Seaholme to date.

Fired, then rehired? Grosse Pointe South football coach's job in limbo
Traditionally, a football coach fears for his job after a losing season. But the Grosse Pointe South Blue Devils' 2010 campaign was nothing short of miraculous, leading to a thrilling playoff run and a trip to the state semifinals.
So why was South head coach Tim Brandon, left, called in for a meeting Dec. 14 and fired by the district's human resources chief? Even stranger, why was he effectively rehired at the end of the meeting, a little more than an hour later?
At the beginning of the meeting, Tom Harwood "literally said, 'We are not renewing your contract,'" Brandon said. "At the end of the meeting, it was, 'Disregard what I said.'"

Little Caesars 10U travel team lays waste to Big Bat Bash Tournament
Little Caesar’s 10U – Detroit travel baseball team out-hit, out-pitched and outplayed the competition and earned its first championship in only its first month of existence at the Big Bat Bash Tournament in Commerce Township Aug. 13-15.
Losing only one game in the tournament, the team stormed back from a six-run deficit in the final game against D.O. Allen Park to win 13-12 and capture the championship.
