Grosse Pointe Woods approves budget, setting stage for fight over tax bump
Members of the Grosse Pointe Woods City Council have faced what they saw at Monday’s (May 21) meeting before: Ninety minutes of nonstop criticism for proposing a budget that requires boosting the city’s millage rate. But this time, they’ll need the public’s approval to do so.
And if the members of the public who showed up Monday to complain are any indication, it might be difficult.

Grosse Pointe Woods City Council takes long look at 2012-13 budget
In a marathon session Monday (March 26), the Grosse Pointe Woods City Council went through the four-inch-thick 2012-13 budget section by section.
“We have cut back on a lot of spending,” said Treasurer/Comptroller Dee Ann Irby. “It is amazing that we are delivering the same services for less costs.” She added that cutting spending is essential: “We are in uncertain financial times.”

DTE 'smart meters' draw activists to Grosse Pointe Woods council session
The Grosse Pointe Woods City Council’s Monday meeting (March 5) had a short agenda and wrapped up in 20 minutes, but there was still time for one surprise.
Residents and activists spoke up during the meeting to object to DTE Energy “smart meters” being installed on houses around the state (although none, as yet, in the Grosse Pointes). The utility has been replacing older analog-style meters with the digital smart meters, which transmit data wirelessly through radio frequencies, as well as enabling real-time monitoring of power use.
