The acrylic panels on the front of Telly's Place were approved as a variance from Grosse Pointe Woods' sign ordinance, which prohibits more than two signs on a business. But the building below, where the Little Blue Book and Towar Productions are relocating, was prohibited by the city council from having four separate signs. Two more were planned for either side of the door.

Grosse Pointe Woods gets it done
in a nine-minute meeting Monday

In the shortest City Council meeting in recent memory, Grosse Pointe Woods got through its agenda Monday evening (Nov. 7), from call to order to adjournment, in just nine minutes.

And that included official farewells to Joe Sucher and Lisa Pinkos Howle, the two members attending their last meeting before the municipal election.

As one might expect, the agenda was a list of unremarkable items, the most noteworthy of which might be the annual bagging of parking meters on Mack Avenue, the gift of free parking during the Christmas season, courtesy of the city. read more...

Secord, in first bid for office, trying
for Grosse Pointe Woods council seat

Allison Secord, left, running for a remaining term of the seat vacated by Gabriela Boddy at the end of 2010, is making her first bid for office. She's a graduate of Grosse Pointe North High School and Western Michigan University.

Why did you decide to run for city council?

Since I graduated from high school in 1999 I’ve seen most of my friends move away from the Pointes. Not necessarily outside of Michigan, but to different suburbs instead of moving back to Grosse Pointe. I want to continue the tradition of having children and grandchildren go to school, and you know, come back to live, raise a family and buy their first home here. read more...

Have you always been interested in politics or was there something that made you become interested?

My political interest has been around since the Reagan years. Five years ago, I started attending city council meetings for Grosse Pointe Woods and ever so slowly, the interest started growing. Two years ago, I was asked to be a precinct captain for elections and that’s when I would say the true bug hit me. read more...

Koester hopes to be a young voice
on Grosse Pointe Woods city council

Michael Koester, left, is making his first run for elective office in a bid for a seat on the Grosse Pointe Woods City Council. He is a University of Michigan graduate who works as a financial analyst for Chrysler LLC.

What made you decide to run for city council?

It came down to the fact that I've been living here my whole life and wanting to be actively involved in the direction of the city. A lot of people like to complain about the local government and what they're doing wrong and I don’t want to be one of those people, I'd rather be a part of it and have a say in what happens. read more...
