Grosse Pointe Woods City Council hears plans, estimates for road, sewer repairs
Grosse Point Woods City Council’s Committee of the Whole meeting Monday (Jan. 23), outlined some of the upcoming improvements to the city’s roads and sewer system.
The city is working in cooperation with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, and engineering consultant Scott Lockwood, from the civil engineering firm Anderson Eckstein and Westrick, Inc.
Council members were told sewer system work will be scheduled for the fall of this year and continue until the summer of 2014.

Grosse Pointe Shores City Council fills public safety seat, hears meter concerns
Stephen Poloni officially left his position as Grosse Pointe Shores' director of public safety for a similar job with the City weeks ago, but his name remains on the door and he's been the department's representative at city council meetings. The double duty ends soon; the Shores city council approved the hiring of John J. Schulte at its Tuesday (Jan.17) meeting.

Grosse Pointe Farms pumping station improvement could cost $4.8 million
An engineering firm has recommended $4.8 million in improvements for Grosse Pointe Farms' Kerby Road pumping station to prevent events like last year's flooding of basements and streets in low-lying areas.
Thomas Biehl, vice president of the engineering firm Hubbell, Roth & Clark, showed city officials how the pumping station's electrical system, mechanical components, water pumps and architecture could be repaired for a total of $4,840,700.

The acrylic panels on the front of Telly's Place were approved as a variance from Grosse Pointe Woods' sign ordinance, which prohibits more than two signs on a business. But the building below, where the Little Blue Book and Towar Productions are relocating, was prohibited by the city council from having four separate signs. Two more were planned for either side of the door.
Grosse Pointe Woods council splits on Mack Avenue sign variances
Not quite a year after putting the uproar over Grosse Pointe Woods' neon sign ordinance behind it, the city council ventured into those waters again Monday (Dec. 19), with a split ruling on signage at two Mack Avenue businesses that led the defeated owner to rebuke the council and stride out the chamber.

Grosse Pointe City Council agrees to shared fire-services agreement
The approval of the intergovernmental agreement on shared fire services was the main topic at the brief Grosse Pointe City council meeting Monday evening (Dec. 12). City Manager Peter Dame outlined a presentation on why the agreement was needed.
With consolidating dispatch services first on the list, now is the time to move on to sharing fire services. According to Dame, after six months of review, all five Grosse Pointe communities have agreed to the terms regarding of the agreement, which are:

Grosse Pointe Park City Council asks for more time on fire agreement
Grosse Pointe Park nearly became the second city to implement a plan to improve and streamline the Grosse Pointes’ fire operations, but the Park’s City Council tabled the matter for more study.
At their Monday (Dec. 12) meeting, council asked for more time to consider the Fire Safety Interlocal Agreement, which codifies some cost-saving measures among the five municipalities and institutes automatic mutual response to fires.

Passengers on the Polar Express (heated Woods park buses) depart from the Community Center for a tour of brightly decorated houses throughout the Grosse Pointes, while listening to the Polar Express story on their way to the North Pole.
