Grosse Pointe Park recognizes artists,
approves Harvard Grill liquor license

Parents, teachers, friends and family were in attendance to recognize student recipients of the annual Grosse Pointe Park Beautification Contest awards, made Monday night (April 23) at the Park City Council meeting. More than 160 elementary students submitted posters for Arbor Week, an annual event that is honored through the Beautification Commission.

“The quality it seems every year just increases,” said Bob Ramsey, chairperson of the event. “And we’re just immensely pleased that the teachers take it so seriously.” read more...

Grosse Pointe Park hears crime report,
approves grants for public safety

With three members absent for various personal reasons, the Grosse Pointe Park City Council accepted two state grants for potentially merging parts of the five public safety departments.  

One grant, for $20,000, will be used to study the combining of the city of Grosse Pointe Park and the city of Grosse Pointe’s public safety departments. The other, for $300,000, can be used for construction of a five-city dispatch center, should it be agreed upon by all.

Council also appointed Margot Parker to fill an unexpected opening on the city's Board of Review. read more...

Grosse Pointe Park City Council asks
for more time on fire agreement

Grosse Pointe Park nearly became the second city to implement a plan to improve and streamline the Grosse Pointes’ fire operations, but the Park’s City Council tabled the matter for more study.

At their Monday (Dec. 12) meeting, council asked for more time to consider the Fire Safety Interlocal Agreement, which codifies some cost-saving measures among the five municipalities and institutes automatic mutual response to fires. read more...

Grosse Pointe Park council re-enlists vets,
as a routine meeting starts new terms

The Grosse Pointe Park City Council's Monday (Nov. 14) meeting started in a jolly mood of congratulations as members Daniel Clark, Robert Denner and Greg Theokas as well as Mayor Palmer Heenan took the oath of office, following their re-election last week. 

It ended with a long discussion of sewers and a question from the audience: Why didn't the oath include the phrase "so help me God"?

I was involved in a neighborhood group 15 years ago, and I told them then that I would run someday. (We were having some problems with the city), and we got different answers from every person we talked to. Grosse Pointe Park council orders
hunters to take it farther offshore

Grosse Pointe Park is dusting off a little-known clause in its ordinance against discharging a weapon within city limits and using it to push duck hunters off the shoreline of Patterson Park.

Public Safety Director David Hiller told City Council members Monday night (Oct. 24) that they have the right to enforce the ordinance up to half a mile offshore. However, one local duck hunter says that without a boat to patrol that far out, police might be reduced to little more than standing on the shoreline and shaking a fist at violators. read more...

A sparse crowd, perhaps put off by the sideways rain blowing by outside, turned out for the final League of Women Voters candidate forum of the season Wednesday night, this one for the four men angling for three seats on the Grosse Pointe Park City Council.

Incumbents Greg Theokas, Daniel E. Clark and Robert Denner were joined by challenger John Teodecki and took questions from both the audience and LWV moderator Susan Leithauser-Yee. read more...

DTE reps lend ear to problems
in Grosse Pointe Park

If DTE regional manager Joe Cazeno makes any more stops at Grosse Pointe city council meetings, he should sell T-shirts outside, perhaps emblazoned Apology Tour 2011.

A summer distinguished by a series of howling thunderstorms brought falling limbs and lengthy power outages to Grosse Pointe Park, followed by persistent streetlight outages that have darkened whole blocks of the city. Resident complaints prompted the Park city council to summon Cazeno and his colleagues to its Monday meeting (Sept. 26) for an explanation. read more...

Grosse Pointe Park council opposes
redistricting; mayor floats secession idea

Wayne County Commissioner Tim Killeen appeared at the Grosse Pointe Park City Council Monday night (Aug. 22), the sort of friendly-update face time he does from time to time, to update the body on matters of interest -- road repair, bike routes, beautification projects, etc. Because Grosse Pointe's representative on the county commission is a busy man, he got a spot at the top of the agenda, and for the same reason, when his presentation was over, Killeen slipped quietly out of the room.

Which was too bad. It might have been interesting to hear his response when, later in the meeting, Mayor Palmer Heenan started talking about secession. read more...
