Pierce Middle School at a glance

Pierce Middle School opened in 1939 with 800 students enrolled in seventh, eighth and ninth grade classes—the old junior-high model. Today, its enrollment is just over 600 students in the middle-school configuration of sixth, seventh and eighth grades.

Principal Gary Buslepp is enthusiastic about the school, its students and parents and especithe renovations that the school has been undergoing for the last few summers. Those changes resulted in 850 new lockers, new tile floors, a new science lab and increased classroom space. Students participate in athletics and other school activities, and nearly 75 percent of the eighth grade class takes the annual spring field trip to Washington, D.C.

“It’s a great learning environment where the parents are involved and truly value education,” Buslepp said.

The school was named after the Rev. John D. Pierce, who founded the Congregational church. From 1836 to 1841, he was state of Michigan's and the United States' first superintendent of public instruction. Pierce died in 1882.
