Parcells Middle School at a glance

Parcells Middle School is one of three in the Grosse Pointe Public School system, serving sixth, seventh and eighth grades. The school is located at 20600 Mack Ave., on the corner of Mack and Vernier, next to the Woods branch of the public library.

The school was established in 1951. Mark Mulholland, who has been there for 12 years, says he is the fifth principal. Or maybe it was sixth?

“I think there was a principal before me who didn’t want his picture on the wall,” he said of a hallway in which portraits of former principals are hung.

Despite declining enrollment (a fact across the district), there’s no shortage of things to do at Parcells. Like the other two middle schools, Parcells has an athletic program–the fightin’ Panthers. In other extracurricular activities, Mulholland divides them into two groups: enrichment and academic.

Examples of academic clubs are typical: Spelling Bee, Math Counts. Enrichment clubs are more popular; the Lego League focuses on computer and technology as problem-solving tools.

“We try really hard to make sure that, of those offerings we have available to kids, there are some that represent the study areas that kids are entering,” Mulholland said.

“I think Parcells is a great place. I think we have wonderful kids. I think that the parents are extremely supportive of the community at large.”
