Brownell Middle School at a glance

Built in 1958, Brownell is one of the Pointes’ newer schools. It is one of three middle schools in the Grosse Pointe school district, located at 260 Chalfonte Ave. in the Farms. The school’s 40 teachers serve about 670 sixth- through eighth-graders.

Students at Brownell Middle School have a wide array of resources at their disposal, both in technology and culture.

“We have a strong journalism program here,” said Principal Michael Dib, “and our students frequently receive superior skill placement in various categories” when their editorials, articles or even cartoons are submitted to competitions in Lansing. The classes became so popular that the school had to open three one-hour time blocks to accommodate the requests for enrollment.

David Legwand, center for the Nashville Predators, is a Brownell graduate.

The school draws from neighborhoods north and south of Moross Road, so the student body splits when it's time to attend high school, with most going to Grosse Pointe South and the rest to North.

“I just think we have top-notch students who are motivated to learn and we have a teaching staff that’s committed to school improvement,” Dib said of his 10 years as the school's fourth principal. “We have parents who support not only their kids, but support our teachers as well. I think that’s something awesome that we have going for us.”
