Grosse Pointe South H.S. at a glance

Grosse Pointe South High School opened in 1928 in the distinctive Georgian, colonial style building that was then called simply Grosse Pointe High School. Designed by George Haas, the building and its tower is one of the tallest in the Pointes, at 133 feet.

Forty years later, it picked up the "South" when Grosse Pointe North was built.

Many subsequent building additions make South what it is today–a two-story wing in 1942, a new gymnasium, auditorium and field room was added in 1954. That was followed by a third floor was added specifically for the math department in 1961, and Wicking Library in 1964. Finally, the S Building was built in 1973 to house the music department.

The school has many distinguished alumni, including actor Edward Herrmann and Chicago White Sox second baseman Chris Getz. On March 14, 1968, South hosted a historical speech by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. King's speech, “The Other America,” was delivered three weeks before his assassination.

Principal Al Diver has school pride and appreciates all students, staff and alumni for making South what it is today. “I have never been associated with an alumni and community so in love with their school. No matter if I am in the company of senior citizens at the Senior Men’s Club or members of the class of 2008, the one constant is pride in their school.  Alumni are always proud to proclaim they attended ‘the High’ or ‘South.’”

Grosse Pointe South High School was ranked #363 in Newsweek’s list of Top 1,000 High School’s in the United States in 2008, the second-highest in Michigan.
