Grosse Pointe North H.S. at a glance

Grosse Pointe North High School opened in 1968 to serve the municipalities north of Moross Road. It is located off of Vernier in Grosse Pointe Woods and today has more than 1,500 students and 160 faculty members.

Famed North alumni include David Legwand and Carly Piper. Legwand plays for the Nashville Predators in the National Hockey League. Piper is a swimmer who won a gold medal in 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

Principal Tim Bearden thinks the high school is truly special: “Despite being below the average size of schools in our conference, our athletic teams compete in the highest divisions of the league more often than virtually any other school, and are consistently among the area’s and state’s best. Our music program is exemplary as the combined vocal and instrumental programs were recognized by the Grammys as one of the Top 100 high school music programs in the nation. Our extra and co-curricular programs are consistently excellent, with our Quiz Bowl program undefeated for seven straight years, and our DECA (business) club sending dozens of students to state and national competitions. Our student newspaper, the North Pointe, and our yearbook, The Valhalla, are consistently recognized as among the state and nation's best publications. Our art program has numerous award-winning artists each year.

“All that being said, what really makes North special is the people. Everyone on our staff truly cares about our students and our school, and our building is a family. Our teachers are the absolute best in their fields, yet are constantly striving to become even better. Grosse Pointe North is one of a kind.”

Grosse Pointe North was ranked 930 in Newsweek’s list of Top 1,000 High Schools in the United States.
