North journalists score highest honor
at MSU conference

Grosse Pointe North High School journalists earned a Spartan Award from the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association at Michigan State University last month. A Spartan is the state’s highest honor for student publications. The staff also set a school record for individual honors.

Editor Christine Bedway, a junior, was awarded first place in human interest feature writing. Juniors Emily Biegas, Hannah Colborn and Michelle Ewart earned first place for news page design while covering the presidential election. Ewart added another first place in informational graphics.

Juniors Rachel Neuenfeldt and Olyvia Brown finished in third place in alternative story form for their coverage of teenage slang. Ewart and Biegas earned third place for diversity coverage while reporting on the controversy of South High School’s play, “The Laramie Project.” Junior James Hicks garnered a third place for review writing. Colborn and Ewart added another third place for their photo essay of North’s rock band concert.

Honorable mentions were given twice to junior Kayla Snitgen for news writing and also to senior Kyle Campbell for sports writing, as well as Biegas, Colborn, Brown and Ewart in various categories.

The North Pointe is published 18 times annually. The faculty adviser is Andrew Taylor.
