Trombly Elementary School at a glance

Grosse Pointe Park's Robert Trombly Elementary School first opened its doors in 1903, at the corner of Jefferson and Beaconsfield, where a Sunoco gas station stands today. It moved to its current location at 820 Beaconsfield in 1930. The school's namesake served on the Grosse Pointe Public Schools board for 30 years, and was known for his dedication, often traveling on his own to find suitable educators, books and supplies for the school.

"Trombly Elementary is very close community," says Principal Walter Fitzpatrick, who notes the enrollment is smaller than most other elementary schools—around 260-290 in most years. "Having lower enrollment allows the entire staff to become familiar with all students. It is not unusual for an upper grade teacher to know many of the younger students. Also, the families become very familiar with all the students as well. It truly is a family affair."

The school's auditorium is the only one among the district's elementary schools to be used for student concerts, fine arts presentations and assemblies.

Trombly offers a number of programs and activities, including Camp Invention 2009, disability awareness workshops, Kids Club, student council, reading support and the Guyton School Book Project.

"The best part of the job is the interaction with the students," Fitzpatrick said. "Nothing gives me greater joy than knowing the students feel comfortable telling me something exciting in their life or to give me a hug or a high five. The pinnacle is sending off the 5th graders to middle school after watching them grow as individuals. It gives you a sense of satisfaction to see how far they have come."
