Monteith Elementary School at a glance

Monteith Elementary School opened on September 6, 1951 to relieve the crowded conditions in the Grosse Pointe Woods/Farms area. There are 551 students currently attending the school at 1275 Cook Rd. in the Woods.

Monteith serves kindergarten through fifth grade, but at one point sixth-graders also attended the school. In 1958, the sixth-grade class was sent to Ferry Elementary due to overcrowding. In 2008, parent and artist Erin Maday cooperated with the parent teacher organization to create Monteith’s “Wild about Learning” lobby mural.

“While all Grosse Pointe Public School elementaries are exemplary, Monteith maintains the largest student population,” said Principal Keith Howell.

“Monteith is rich in tradition and continues to maintain excellence in education, providing students with the tools and the background to prepare them to take their unique place in an ever-changing world.”

Monteith will continue to offer students exceptional education opportunities. The school achieved “green” school status last year and will continue to enhance learning opportunities in mathematics, science and technology. The school even has a portable computer lab that doubles lab capabilities in the building.
