Summer school keeps the learning alive

With the end of the school year comes the beginning of summer school. But while summer school was once a synonym for student prison, today's courses are far more likely to be about personal enrichment and warm-weather fun.

The elementary Summer Learning Program offers a variety of five-week courses for students in grades K-8, covering math, reading, writing and science enrichment classes.

One is Camp Invention, going on this week (June 22-26) in which students build inventive creative-thinking skills, with hands-on experience, through fun. Students will participate in five exercises each day. Typical is the Treasure of the Vikings module, where children try to become the first to find hidden treasure.

They might also try to build a new land vehicle or comic-book character. The exercises are integrated with science, mathematics, history and the arts to provoke students mind to invent for fun.

Other classes will begin July 7, and registrations are still being taken. Parents may read the catalog and register online.
