It's not quite a rare baseball card,
but a collector's item just the same
Amid the hubbub of top administrators getting sent to the showers for storing porn on their office computers, the Grosse Pointe Senior Men’s Club honored 49 graduating seniors from South and North high schools. Each student will graduate with a 4.0 or better grade-point average over four years.
The certificates were presented May 24 by North principal Timothy Bearden and South Assistant Principal Jeremy Hawkins, with the help of Superintendent Dr. Suzanne Klein. Because the South certificates were signed the previous week, before Principal Al Diver exited the building, that makes them collectors’ items.
Klein was also honored at the luncheon for her long service to the school district, and her 15 years as superintendent, according to Past President and event chair John C. Prost. Prost presented her with flowers in honor of her retirement.
The Men’s Club, which annually honors top seniors, meets on the second and fourth Tuesday each month at the War Memorial. Men age 55 and older are welcome to attend the luncheons. The club, which has sub-groups on investments, bridge, books, golf, bowling and technology, has 750 members.
Model A’s and T’s
Dr. Bill Rice is on the lookout for Model A or Model T cars to take part in a Holley Ear Institute fundraiser June 16 to honor Ford. If you are willing to spend a couple hours with your treasured possession for a good cause contact Bill via email.
Like Mother, like daughter
Laurie Arora startled a few folks when she ousted a long-time incumbent from the Grosse Pointe Park City Council. But her daughter Simone is following in her footsteps. Simone has been president of the Rotary Interact Club at South this year and the group was active in more than 20 charitable and help-your-neighbor activities.
Lots of friends
How many bridesmaids does it take to hold a wedding? Kate Middleton had only one when she married Prince William. But the word is the June 4 nuptials of Sarah Fox and Calvin Ford, scion of the car company, will require 14. Heck, that’s an entire women’s ice hockey team.
Sort of daily
Ron Dzwonkowski, editorial columnist for the Freep, observed recently about his employer: “On guard for 179 years, but only available on your doorstep three days a week.”
Stylish entrance
Grosse Pointe Blue Book publisher Kim Tower ended her year as district governor of Rotary Clubs from Ontario to Blissfield, including Detroit and Grosse Pointe, in style, according to reports.
She rode into the main event in Lombard, Ill., a northern Chicago suburb in a sedan chair, dressed as an Egyptian princess. Two of the stalwart, toga-clad men who carried her were Bob Bashara of the Park and Michael MacKool of the Woods.
I guess you had to be there.
Lest you think that was all foolishness, Ms. Tower has been a tireless campaigner to end polio in the world and alleviate poverty in Central America. She is viewed as one of the best Rotary district governors in Michigan
