It was blowing pretty good from SSW with a threat of showers as the Grosse Pointe Boat Club racers started their weekly race on Wednesday (July 14). It promised to be a fast race. The fleet went marks to port, which meant a couple of reaches and a run along the channel before a close reach back to the dock.

The weather threatened, but the squall went by a few miles to the North.  St Clair Shores weather station showed SSW 7-10 at 7 p.m., WNW 10-20 at 7:40 p.m. and S 1-6 at 8 p.m. The racers got some of the gusts, and the promise of a fast race was kept as they finished just before the breeze lightened.

Jim Miller nailed the first start and led until the end of the run when Don Healy got some boat speed

by coming in at a hotter angle and made a pass. Then, when Jim lost a jib sheet at the mark, Don was able to capitalize for a comfortable lead to a first place gun. Speaking of jib sheets...Tom Kressbach and his Sunshine Boys wrapped their jib sheet on the head stay during a jibe right at the start, and it cost them any chance of staying with the rest of their fleet. But after the "kid" on the crew (Tom-who we are certain is north of 65) got up on the foredeck and got the d*#@ thing flying, they completed the course with a long view of the rest of the fleet's transoms. Ed and Will Harrah finally got the kind of breeze their Bristol likes and sailed to a second place.

In the second start, it was Conundrum at the gun, taking first - looks like Joel Stone and P.J. Ryder will do fine without their Zen master, George Young, whose schedule has him missing a few races. And, speaking of Zen masters, Brad Birch is back and what? They took a second. Brad sailed around several marks rail-to-rail with Dale Scrace, Bob Krueger and Mike Marsh. At one point coming into the finish most of the second start boats were charging to the finish line so close together the dock committee was wondering how we were going to take times as they finished 6, 18 and 26 seconds behind Brad. Dale Scrace took the third.
