Grosse Pointe Soccer celebrates wins,
announces travel-league tryouts

The Grosse Pointe Soccer Association is ready to hold tryouts for girls' and boys' travel leagues, as it celebrates significant recent victories by several of its teams.

The Salvo ’98 Green boys' team coached by Eric Springer took home the tournament's top honors at the Cherry Capital Cup, hosted by Traverse Bay Area Youth Soccer in Traverse City the weekend of May 15-16.

Salvo beat the Strikers Kujawski 3-0 in their Saturday morning tournament opening game and followed that performance with a 2-1 win in the noon game against the host club from TBAYS, North Storm '98.
On Sunday, Salvo took down two more opponents with a 2-0 win against the Red Arrow Rebels in the 10 a.m. game, and a 3-0 decision over the Oxfor Wildcats in the 3 p.m. game.  Salvo's four-game sweep earned them the top spot and tournament champions title in their group.

Salvo ’98 Green players include: Benjamin Matheson, Brandon Simone, Brian Garvey, C. Trevor Stormes, Christian deRuiter, Garrett Weidig, Graham Ryan, Griffin Murray, Jack Kennedy, Jackson Rosati, Kristian Uldbjerg, Seth Carolan, Wyatt Puscas and Zachary Stanczyk.

Coach Springer's Salvo '00 (U10) Green team also swept their four-game tournament opponents to take home the championship for the U10 Boys Select division with wins over the Tri-Hawks (8-2), Muskegon Lakers (2-1), Dearborn (4-1), and a 4-3 win in the championship game on Sunday at Keystone Soccer Complex in a rematch with the Muskegon Lakers.

Among the girls, Breakers ’98 Green team capped off the Mother’s Day weekend at the Novi Jaguar Invitational Tournament by winning the Girls U12 Elite Division under the direction of head coach Chris Graczyk.

Travel teams from various age divisions and throughout the state of Michigan competed in the annual tournament.

Despite inclement weather and wet conditions, the Breakers advanced to the finals with a 2-0-1 record that included wins over the Michigan Burn (2-0) and the Plymouth Reign (3-0), and a 1-1 tie with the Dexter Shockwave.

The division’s championship game held at Schoolcraft College pitted the Breakers against the Burn in a rematch for the tournament title. The Breakers won 2-1 for the championship celebration on Mother’s Day.

Breakers’ goalkeeper Emily McPharlin helped her team’s efforts by recording the fewest goals allowed in their tournament’s division. The Breakers’ defense and midfield units provided solid defense and kept the opposition off the scoreboard, while the team’s forwards netted the highest goal total in the tournament’s division with eight tallies.

Travel-league tryouts for children in U8 to U19 divisions will be held June 12 and 13, with a few on the 14th. See the complete schedule on the Grosse Pointe Soccer Association website.
