Shores councilman asks public for
input, involvement in new year

The Grosse Pointe Shores City Council kept with the spirit of the holiday season Tuesday night (Dec. 15) and encouraged more involvement from residents in the coming year.

“I’d like to talk about perhaps adding one or two people to each of the community’s key committees,” said Councilman Ted Kedzierski. “I think it’s important to be more inclusive, to be more open with city business.”

Kedzierski mentioned, in particular, adding to the Planning Commission and maybe to the Finance Committee. This possibility will be discussed at the next city council meeting.

“If you are so interested in serving on a commission or a committee, then contact one of the council people and… let us know that you’re interested,” Kedzierski said.

Resident John Booth said there would be more resident involvement if the residents were better informed on meeting agenda items.

“We need to have residents informed ahead of time,” Booth said. “There needs to be a lot more sharing of information because, otherwise, all you guys get is a lot of discussion and no action.”

Booth said that, while he is “mindful of the Open Meeting Act and the need to conduct committee business in a public forum,” he is discouraged by the little amount of time spent on projecting what the future budget will look like. He said the council takes on every issue “one at a time,” with no regard for the future.

“I would say that, for the committee as a whole, nothing was done [tonight].”

On the whole, though, the council is going to enter the next year with more optimism. Each member thanked the residents for support and wished everyone happy holidays.

In other business, the council:

  • approved a compensation package for Municipal Judge Theodore Metry.
  • appointed five residents to the Shores Board of Review.
