Grosse Pointe Farms council approves
new Parks and Recreation committee

The Grosse Pointe Farms City Council took care of business briskly and efficiently Monday night (July 12), creating a new committee, approving water and sewer rates, and green-lighting a September fundraiser on the Hill before adjourning after less than an hour.

The council unanimously approved the creation of a Parks and Recreation Committee to advise the council on related issues. The committee will consist of at least seven and as many as 14 members appointed by the council and include both private citizens and council representatives, all of whom will serve two-year terms. The reason for the large range in numbers is to accommodate flexibility in membership.

A total increase of 6 percent in the water and sewer rate was also approved unanimously. The increase by the Detroit Water and Sewer Department in the sewer rate was the largest factor in the hike. The water rate also went up by 10 cents per 1,000 cubic feet because of a decrease in water sales.

Residents should take note that the Hill will be closed to traffic on Sept. 1 for the Racing for Kids to the Hill fundraiser. The event will take place from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. and feature exotic cars, race cars and other attractions. The charity raised $30,000 last year for the pediatric services of local hospitals such as Beaumont of Grosse Pointe, the DMC and Children's Hospital of Detroit.
