Launch those cardboard boats, mateys;
Michigan Marina Day is Saturday

Ahoy, Grosse Pointe City mariners. It's time to build your vessels of cardboard, because Saturday (Aug.14) is Michigan Marina Day at Neff Park.

Sponsored by the City of Grosse Pointe and the Grosse Pointe Boat Club, the daylong event includes a number of events to promote Michigan boating and boat safety. Check flyers in the park for specifics, but here's the tentative schedule:

  • Noon-2 Coast Guard On-Board Safety Checks, Boat Exhibit – Tentative (Marina)
  • 2-6 Capt’n Willie - The Great Lakes Pirate
  • Music, interactive education for children (classroom)
  • 2-3 Synchronized Swimming Show (pool)
  • 3-4:30 Cardboard Boat Races (pool) Note: Boats must be made of cardboard and duct tape only, rules available at pool office
  • 4-6 Arts and Crafts, face painting, crafts, miniature sailboat races (park tables)
  • 4-5 Social Hour – hosted by GPBC (tent)
  • 4-6 Live music by Balduck Mountain Ramblers (pavilion)
  • 5 Dinner (tent) – hosted by GP City ($5/person)
  • Italian sausage, chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, baked beans, corn on the cob, redskin potatoes, coleslaw, etc.
