Grosse Pointe City Council adjusts
Mack Avenue parking zoning

The Grosse Pointe City Council approved an RO-1 Zoning text amendment after a quick public hearing at this week’s meeting, a step toward increasing parking availability on Mack Avenue.

The amendment will focus on allowing greater parking flexibility within the RO-1 districts, or office and business districts.

These districts are almost entirely on Mack Avenue and a majority of the businesses have low parking requirements and limited parking options for customers. The amendment will allow salons and barber shops to open within the RO-1 districts and will require they provide adequate parking for customers and not just employees. Other shops may be allowed to do this in the future.

In other business, the parking lot behind ACE Hardware will be converted to a gated lot system once the final concept is finished. Customers will pay as they would in a parking structure and will no longer receive parking tickets for forgetting the time while shopping. Carl Walker, an engineering firm out of Kalamazoo, will direct the construction plans.

Construction was also approved on Lincoln Road, Washington Road and University Place. These three areas have several sinking catch basins, which are rectangular storm sewers that help to collect water along the gutter lines. The plan is to replace the concrete around the basins to prevent sinking. This will be a permanent repair and is still within the City’s budget.

Kim Kleinow was officially appointed as the new City Treasurer.

City Council will meet again August 16.
