Grosse Pointe Woods City Council hears
plans, estimates for road, sewer repairs

Grosse Point Woods City Council’s Committee of the Whole meeting Monday (Jan. 23), outlined some of the upcoming improvements to the city’s roads and sewer system.

The city is working in cooperation with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, and engineering consultant Scott Lockwood, from the civil engineering firm Anderson Eckstein and Westrick, Inc.

Council members were told sewer system work will be scheduled for the fall of this year and continue until the summer of 2014.

Members asked about any disruption construction might have on the city. Lockwood assured that in many repair instances, the only sign of work would be a small work crew above any one manhole access cover.

“Few repairs will lead to digging and heavy construction, most repairs will take place underground,” said Lockwood, who added that each individual repair would take roughly a week.

Council members asked about the longevity of the sewer repairs.

“The sewer repairs will make the existing pipe like new,” said Lockwood. “Crews will install a ‘lining’ inside the pipe creating an impermeable barrier.”

The repairs are to have a lifespan of roughly 50 years, and after that time frame, inspection will continue to assure the repair is satisfactory.

Council is awaiting the financial recommendations before addressing the issue further in an upcoming council meeting.

Turning to street repairs, Lockwood presented a map highlighting proposed road repairs around the city, ranked by urgency. The work will cost the city upwards of $15 million, council was told, but the number is not final as the extent of the road work has not been determined.

“We need to do the proper amount of road work, while factoring in the costs for other road repair,” said Novitke “The roads need to be repaired.”

“This is a great city,” said Lockwood “The council is full of dedicated and proactive individuals.”

During the City Council’s brief meeting beforehand, the panel voted to award a contract for the Cross Connection Control program, which provides for inspection of the city water system, to a Troy-based company, HydroDesigns. The three-year contract will cost the city $26,100.
