Andrew Michels, Nick Bsharah and Cameron Francis, L-R, take care of another satisfied customer at their neighborhood's annual dog wash to benefit the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society.

Kids soak the dogs and raise $1,200 in benefit for GP Animal Adoption

The 4th annual dog wash held in Grosse Pointe Park was a soggy success. Two dozen Defer Elementary School friends and their families got together August 22 for the event, supporting Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society, and raised over $1,200, exceeding their goal.

Maya Petropoulos was more than eager to register the dogs as they came running in for their baths. Then, the group of children shampooed and rinsed the dogs, giving them lots of love and attention along the way. Lastly, each dog received a treat. Treats were on hand for the humans as well; the kids had a snack and lemonade stand.

At day's end, 49 dogs, 11 birds and a car had gone under the hose held by kids ages 6 to 13.

Alex Hughes, 9, came up with the dog-wash idea four years ago, and it grew into a great, fun-filled family event.

Special thanks go to the companies who donated to make this year's event super successful: Kroger, Einstein Bagels, Ace Hardware, TCBY, Staples and Hungry Howies Pizza.
