Pack your oohs and ahhs–
fireworks season gets underway
The late arrival of summer temperatures comes just in time–fireworks season is upon us. Fans of colorful explosions will have a rich banquet of choices in coming days.
The biggest, Grosse Pointe Woods' show, gets the Pointes off with a bang. The show is set for Sunday (June 28) at Parcells Middle School, starting at dusk. Monday, June 29 is the rain date. Veterans advise arriving early to stake a spot for both your body and car; the latter in particular are scarce.
The Farms and Shores follow with shows on July 4. The Farms’ fireworks take off from Pier Park around 10 p.m., but Farms residents can join the party in the park, which starts with music at 7 p.m. Admission is free. Non-residents can watch the show from outside. Some parking will be allowed on Lake Shore Rd. and neighboring streets, but as with the Woods show, a little advance planning is recommended.
The Shores’ show is the same night, from Osius Park on the waterfront. This show actually ignites from the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club next door. Parking can be a problem as lots fill quickly. The earlier patrons arrive, they less they walk.
If that doesn't satisfy, true fireworks fans can find many other displays in the metro area and elsewhere. This website has a fairly comprehensive listing.
