Gleaners' drive to keep children fed
begins with volunteers in the Pointes

Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan has launched its annual food drive, as 250,000 needy children prepare to start summer vacation–away from school, their consistent source of one or two meals per day.

On May 30, Gleaners kicked off a series of Michigan community food drives, starting with all five Grosse Pointes.

Teams of volunteers walked neighborhood streets and collected food from residents.

“We are excited about this year’s Hunger Heroes for Kids campaign,” Gleaners President DeWayne Wells said. “It is always gratifying to see communities helping each other during times of need.”

“We are always needing volunteers,” said Gleaners spokesman Spencer Hayes.

Gleaners said its goal is to be able to give 2,000,000 meals to needy children and families this summer. The nonprofit organization has been holding this summer food drive in Michigan for over 30 years.

The drive continues June 13 in Ferndale, Oak Park, Huntington Woods and Pleasant Ridge; June 18 in Farmington and Farmington Hills, and June 25 in Birmingham, Royal Oak and Bloomfield Hills, according to Hayes.
