Facebook chatter said the spirit rock outside Grosse Pointe South High School had been painted to read "Free Diver," but by the time this photo was taken Saturday evening, spray paint had covered the prankster's efforts – or what seemed to be.

Grosse Pointe South principal, assistant
resign over 'inappropriate adult images'

Grosse Pointe public school administrators have acknowledged the resignations of Allan Diver, principal of Grosse Pointe South High School, and Brandon Slone, assistant principal at the same school, effective today (May 21). In a press release, administrators acknowledged that "both were under investigation for violations of the 'Technology Acceptable Use' policy related to personal emails with inappropriate adult images. No students were involved in any way."

The release goes on:

“We expect staff members, regardless of position, to demonstrate professional conduct in all matters, including use of the computer network,” said Thomas Harwood, assistant superintendent of human resources. “Personal emails of staff members must reflect the values and professional standards of our district as noted in our Acceptable Use policies.”

Superintendent Suzanne Klein said, “The Grosse Pointe Board of Education and the district are strongly committed to behaviors that reflect professionalism in the classrooms and offices and on the computer network.”

Joan Murphy, current assistant principal, will serve as acting principal for the remainder of the school year.

The acknowledgement came 24 hours after GrossePointeToday.com reported the firing of Diver, left, following the discovery that he had sent and received sexually explicit materials under his school email account and on his office computer. Sources said the computer was turned over to law enforcement for further examination.

Sources said the investigation began after a similar incident with a school employee in another district turned up a gpschools.org address in that person's email, who turned out to be Diver.

Diver was hired at South in 2001, after serving as principal of Dakota High School in the Chippewa Valley district. He was voted Michigan Principal of the Year in 2008.

South was bruised two years ago with the arrest of Robert Bopp, the South boys' hockey coach, on charges of criminal sexual conduct with an underage boy at his Taylor home, and possession of child pornography.

Grosse Pointe, le sigh...

I think this is a sorry excuse for reporting, journalism, and facts. Solely based on the language and tone used to describe this story, there is blatant sensationalism here. No matter the source, it's apparent that nobody really has their facts straight nor knows exactly what is going on here. And, the fact that this story is being sensationalized and reported inaccurately just gives Grosse Pointe and GP South a bad image. Does porn or "sexually explicit" materials even accurately describe the material found on the computer? And what is the story behind something being found on someone from another school district's computer that linked to GP South-possibly a mass email or some sort of spam? We don't know. All we do know is that prematurely dragging the reputations of these two men through the mud, and forcing them into a position of resignation-before the school year is even finished-leaves one of America's top 500 high schools in the nation in a state of confusion and potential ruin. GP South students and the families of these men will be devastatingly affected by this whole situation and I think Grosse Pointe should prove its reputation wrong and stop spreading rumors and lies and jumping to conclusions and gossiping. There are so many greater issues in this world.

GP Today reports Diver fired...

Shameful reporting by the GP Today staff. Clearly jumped the shark here. Yesterday's report states Al Diver was FIRED. Today's story states, "The acknowledgement came 24 hours after GrossePointeToday.com reported the firing of Diver", yet  it also states, "Grosse Pointe public school administrators have acknowledged the resignations of Allan Diver, principal of Grosse Pointe South High School, and Brandon Slone".    Which one was it???? Fired? Or resigned?  Also, the use of the word "PORN"! Seriously?  Nancy, you should join the Gridiron Club. You can smear a man's name like an employee of Einstein"s smears a bagel. I'll do what's becoming the norm in GP. I'll hide behind a screenname

HIPPO-CRITE

I liked and admired Al Diver.  I do not condone sensational journalism that discredits a person or their family.
Our leaders have to be held accountable for their actions if our kids are going to buy into being responsible adults.
"Smearing" hippo?? - I'd say you did a pretty good job.  Shame on you.

Diver's exit

There is no effective distinction between resigning when confronted with overwhelming evidence of an offense that requires firing, and actual firing. And while "inappropriate adult images" sounds more genteel than "pornography," again -- in this case there is no effective distinction. I'll stand by our reporting. -- NND

 I would not necessarily

I would not necessarily blame GPT for saying Diver was fired when in fact he resigned.  It seems a source that both GPT and WDIV had access to said he was fired and probably meant something to the effect of "He's as good as fired".  But had both GPT and WDIV tried to get a more official confirmation they would have found that the district was not ready to confirm anything yet (as the Grosse Pointe Patch did) and would not have assumed he was fired.
And calm down hippo (you chose the username -- I didn't).  Porn is not some smear word.  A lot of people enjoy porn.  Enjoying porn by itself is not a crime or something to be ashamed of.  Using school resources for porn instead of doing your job is something to be ashamed of, however.

Brandon Slone

I don't presume to know all of the facts in this case, but I sure hope that we didn't lose a quality leader like Brandon Slone over a few forwarded emails that showed a little T and A.
