Grosse Pointe Unitarian now signals
that it welcomes without sexual bias

The Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church voted Sunday (March 6) to be recognized as a Welcoming Congregation, a designation that defines the church as being openly welcoming to all people regardless of their sexual orientation.

The change was accomplished with the guidance of the Boston-based Unitarian Universalist Association.

“We're thrilled to have finally earned the right to hang our rainbow flags,” said Janet Peplin, chair of the welcoming committee. A year-long series of forums and educational events led to the voting and the change. The goal of the workshops was to reduce prejudice by increasing understanding and acceptance among people of different sexual orientations.

The church's bylaws will have a new paragraph: “The congregation declares and affirms its special responsibility to promote the full participation of persons in all of its endeavors without regard to race, color, gender, disability, affectional or sexual orientation, age, or national origin."

The Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church is located at 17150 Maumee in the City of Grosse Pointe. Sunday services begin at 10:30a.m.
