Cadieux Road repairs start May 4

With warm weather comes its biggest mixed blessing: Road-repair season. Residents of Cadieux Road are about to commence two and a half months of inconvenience while their street is resurfaced, but will have new curbs, gutters and smoother driving by mid-July.

The project officially starts Monday, May 4. Here's what you need to know:

What are the affected blocks? Cadieux between Jefferson and Kercheval.

Will the street be open? Yes, to southbound through traffic. Northbound vehicles will be detoured onto Notre Dame, although other streets in the area will likely see increased traffic as well.

How will residents be affected? They'll mostly be inconvenienced, but the planned replacement of driveway approaches will mean a seven-day stretch of parking elsewhere while the surface is prepared and concrete is poured and set.

Will the Beaumont Hospital emergency room entrance be open? Yes, but northbound traffic will have to get there via the Notre Dame detour.

What happens upon completion? There will be no more parking allowed on either side of Cadieux. Some residents aren't happy about that. "I understand why," said Chelsea Groustra, who lives on Cadieux between Maumee and St. Paul. "But for everybody who lives on Cadieux and doesn't have an extreme driveway, it will be tricky to park everyone when you have guests."

Who's in charge? The project is partially funded by federal stimulus money, via the Michigan Department of Transportation. And while Cadieux is the border between the Park and the City, "the Park will be helping, but it's mainly a City project," said Paul Weitzel, director of public service for the City of Grosse Pointe.
