Sweep locks down Grosse Pointe North,
turns up marijuana in car, none in school

After a surprise drug sweep last year at Grosse Pointe South High School, Wednesday (Nov. 10) was North's turn. Police arrived at the school at 9 a.m., locked students in their classrooms and swept the school, parking lots, vehicles and lockers for contraband, using approximately 15 drug-sniffing dogs from various police agencies.

No drugs were found in the school, a departmental press release stated, although one student car parked on Morningside Drive was found to contain marijuana and a scale. The sweep took about an hour.

Al Fincham, city administrator and public safety director for Grosse Pointe Woods, called the search a "proactive" one that would "send a clear message to students, parents and the community as a whole that the school administration works closely with the department to keep our schools drug-free."

The event was staged as a training exercise for the dogs and their handlers, which included Raleigh, handled by Sgt. Mike Almeranti from the City of Grosse Pointe.

marijuana sweep

Sounds to me like an illegal search and perhaps seizure.  There may also have been an illegal restraint.  Where is the probable cause?  There could be some civil liability here against the police and the city.  Mmmmm...........
