Grosse Pointe Farms Mayor James Farquhar presents a city council resolution of honor to Carolyn Ewald Kratzet.

Ewald Foundation awards scholarships;
Farms honors Carolyn Ewald Kratzet

Eight college-bound high school graduates have been chosen to share $25,000 in scholarship grants for the 2010-11 school year by the 82-year-old Henry T. Ewald Foundation of Grosse Pointe Farms.

The eight were honored at a luncheon at the Country Club of Detroit. During the ceremony, Farms Mayor James Farquhar presented a city council resolution proclaiming July 3 “Carolyn Ewald Kratzet and Ewald Foundation Day” in the Farms, not only in recognition of her efforts to help needy college-bound students, but also for her financial contribution to the Ewald Branch of the Grosse Pointe Public Library, and for her years of work with other Michigan charities, including the Detroit Zoological Society.

More than 100 applicants were screened by the foundation staff and family members during months of personal interviews. The foundation provides four years of scholarship help, as long as the students' grades are satisfactory. Some 600 students have been given higher-education assistance by the foundation since 1957. Currently the foundation is assisting 40 recipients who attend various colleges and universities around the country.

The Ewald charitable foundation was launched in 1928 by Henry T. Ewald Sr., a founder of the Campbell-Ewald advertising firm. In 1953, the leadership passed to H.T. “Ted” Ewald, philanthropist and Chevrolet dealer in Grosse Pointe Park, and then on to family members upon his death in in 1996.

Donations to the Ewald Foundation are tax-deductible. For information, contact Executive Director Shelagh Czuprenski via the group's website
