Grosse Pointe Theatre is a busy stage in May, with its final production of the season, a workshop and scholarship auditions.

"Grease" opens Sunday, May 9, with a 2 p.m. matinee. Additional performances are May 13-15 at 8 p.m., May 16 at 2 p.m., May 19-22 at 8 p.m. and May 23 at 4 p.m. Tickets are $22, and advance purchase is advised, as sales are strong for this popular show. Call 313-881-4004 or visit the theater's website for tickets or more information. Some discounts and group rates may be available.

Applications for the theater's annual scholarship awards were due by May 1, and auditions will start at 10 p.m. May 15 at the Fries Auditorium at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial. College scholarship money is available to public and private high-school students from the Pointes or those who have experience in Grosse Pointe Theatre productions. Eligibility rules and application/audition requirements, along with paperwork, are available at the theater's website.

A workshop for aspiring playwrights will begin Wednesday, May 12, at 7 p.m. at the theater's rehearsal facility, 315 Fisher Road, in the City. Subsequent class sessions will be determined after the first day of class.

Award-winning playwright Kim Carney will instruct and mentor students on the fundamentals of dramatic structure, character creation and plot development while assisting them in writing a short scene depicting the history of Grosse Pointe in this multi-part workshop. Each student’s scene will be read aloud and discussed as it progresses, and the best of these scenes will be selected for inclusion in a full-length play. The play will be performed inside St. Paul's Cemetery in September.

The registration fee is $75 for Grosse Pointe Theatre members and $100 for all others. For details on enrollment, contact education director Harry Burkey at 313-885-1393, email him or call Grosse Pointe Theatre at 313-881-4004.
