War Memorial plans two events
for Alger House's centennial

The Grosse Pointe War Memorial has announced two events to mark the 100th anniversary of its home, the historic Alger House. These events, a gala and a community celebration day, are designed to increase awareness of the nationally registered treasure, ensure its continued preservation and fund the Patriots Scholarship Fund.

A volunteer committee co-chaired by Linda Lloyd and Diane Zedan was formed in 2009 to design the events – Come Fly with Me!, a gala evening of dining and dancing, and Community Celebration Day. The events will celebrate the history of the Alger House and provide visitors a glimpse into life in the early 20th century.

Also commemorating the anniversary will be the March release of "Images of America-Grosse Pointe War Memorial," a book with 200 photographs about the Alger House. The authors are Grosse Pointers Ann Marie Aliotta and Suzy Berschback.

Joining Lloyd, Zedan and Berschback on the 100th Anniversary Committee are Col. David Augustine, Daniel R. Beck, Mary Ann Bury, Billie Deason, Don Joseph DeSeranno, Lisa Mower Gandelot, Hon. William J. Giovan, Ginger Keena Hupp, D. Mark Krueger, Arlene Lewis, Clarinda Ray, Claire Perry, S. Gary Spicer Sr. and Celia Wade.

Come Fly with Me! will take place in the house on Saturday, April 17, starting at 6 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Alger will welcome guests including Henry Ford, the Wright brothers and Thomas Edison at a cocktail reception, followed by a strolling dinner in the adjacent Fries Crystal Ballroom overlooking Lake St Clair. The historic guests will be portrayed by members of the Grosse Pointe Theatre. Guests will enjoy the big band sounds of The Rhythm Society Orchestra and the Satin Dolls.

Reservations are $250 per person for the Patron level, which includes a patron reception, and $100 for Friends. Reservations can be made by calling the War Memorial at 313-881-7511.

Community Celebration Day will be Sunday, May 23, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  It is a free-admission day for the entire family with children’s games and attractions. There will be guided tours of the Alger House, historic guests, old time photograph opportunities, antique car rides and military equipment displays as well as music and other entertainment.

The War Memorial at the Alger House is at 32 Lake Shore Road in the Farms. More information is available at the War Memorial website.
