GP Unitarians hold workshops
on GLBT issues, outreach

The Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church (GPUC) has begun a "Welcoming Congregation" workshop series, an introspective and interactive educational journey into the issues surrounding the lives of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. The yearlong program developed by the Unitarian Universalist Association is intended to educate the congregation and the community about how to be purposeful in its welcome and outreach to the GLBT community.

"We are very excited to be offering this program to our congregation," said Janet Peplin, GPUC Welcoming Chair. "We are striving to make this an enriching and rewarding process that will benefit the entire community. The need for GLBT education has become very clear, and our workshops promise to be a first step toward filling that need."

The Welcoming program centers on a series of 14 workshops that offer an opportunity for personal growth and understanding. Upcoming highlights include:

  • A guest panel from PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) hosting an interactive discussion.
  • Workshops focusing on oppression, HIV/Aids, and Religion and Homosexuality.
  • A Friday night film series with discussions.
  • Age-appropriate sessions for our junior and senior students focusing on elements of bullying and isolation of gay adolescents, particularly in our local schools.
