War Memorial sets Boston-Edison
neighborhood tour for Monday

Guests of the Grosse Pointe War Memorial soon will explore a neighborhood that was home to the innovators who helped build the modern age. Led by Preservation Wayne, the tour will explore the Boston-Edison Historic District of Detroit on Monday, July 27.

The Boston-Edison Historic District is on the City, State and National Registers of Historic Places. The neighborhood boasts more than 900 single-family homes, all mansions for the wealthy and homes for members of the professional and upper-middle classes. Early residents included Henry Ford, S.S. Kresge, B. Siegel, Horace Rackham and four of the seven Fisher brothers.

The tour will be held Monday, July 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Reservations were required by July 17. Cost of the program is $67 per person. The fee includes guided tour, lunch and motor coach transportation. For more information, call 313-881-7511.

The Boston-Edison district encompasses four streets: Boston, Chicago, Longfellow and Edison, spanning from Woodward to Linwood. It is located in the geographic heart of Detroit, just north of New Center, Wayne State University and the Cultural District. The homes were built between 1903 and 1940. While each structure is different, each home represents the highest standards of excellence. Visitors can discover elaborate workmanship and impressive stone construction. The area is a diverse mix of architectural styles ranging from bungalows and ranches to Tudors.

In addition, the step-on guide from Preservation Wayne will take guests to Arden Park, the New Center and Brush Park. The program includes a catered box lunch in the beautiful courtayard of The Inn at 97 Winder, weather permitting. The first floor of the historic inn also will be open for viewing by guests.

The tour departs from the Grosse Pointe War Memorial, located at 32 Lake Shore Drive. There is lighted and free parking on site. Residents of all communities are welcome to participate.
