Two characters meet in a scene from 2008's "Talking Headstones" program in the historic St. Paul's Cemetery in the Farms.

An all-new 'Talking Headstones'
to enliven Grosse Pointe history

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story contained an incorrect phone number. The correct one is below.

History comes to life once again with the popular "Talking Headstones" collaboration between the Grosse Pointe Historical Society and the Grosse Pointe Theatre’s Historical Pointes. Produced on a stage in St. Paul’s Cemetery, performances will be Friday-Sunday, Sept. 10-12, starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15; $10 for members of the GPHS and GPT. Free parking is available at the Grosse Pointe United Methodist Church, 211 Moross Road, across the street from the cemetery at Moross and Country Club Lane.

This year’s production is an entirely new script, according to GPT education director and show producer Harry Burkey. It will cover the years 1890-1930 and feature stories of the Alger, Martens, Scanlon and Van Teim families, among others. There’s even an encounter between temperance advocate Carry Nation and Mary Alger, who fought to repeal Prohibition. Episodes include “The Legend of Windmill Pointe,” “Miss Kitty Scanlon,” “A Thirst for a Change” and “Life at the Moorings.”

Noted Michigan playwright Kim Carney has returned to head up the writing of this year’s production. Jane Burkey is the director.
