'Our Rivers, Our Lakes' showcases
local waters at Grosse Pointe Art Center

Michigan’s water wonderland was celebrated at the opening of “Our Rivers, Our Lakes”, the new all-media, juried show at the Grosse Pointe Art Center, Aug. 13. From woodland streams to the greatest Great Lake – all bodies of water were well represented by photography, ceramic, beadwork, watercolor, sculpture, glass, oil, acrylic, encaustic and pastel works of art. The juror was Larry Cressman, a well-known Michigan artist who is a member of the faculty at the University of Michigan.

Best of Show was won by Janet Hamrick of Ferndale, for her watercolor and pencil piece entitled “Beaches.” Second place went to Grosse Pointe Woods resident Nobuko Yamasaki for her mixed media piece entitled “Cylindrical Flight.” Third place was awarded to Ted Fines of Grosse Pointe for his untitled photograph depicting a docked boat in an atmospheric lake setting. Honorary Mentions went to James Brown of Troy, Marianne Defer-Pfeifer of Harrison Township, Bob Youngert of Sterling Heights and Lori Zurvalec of Grosse Pointe. A special award was given to Mary Hartman of Harrison Twp. for her watercolor entitled “Water Falls Among Rocks”.

Director Amy DeBrunner, in addition to presenting the awards, introduced the newly elected president of the GPAC board of directors, Joanne Fitzgerald Ross of Grosse Pointe Park.

James McNelis of Grosse Pointe Woods, a junior at Grosse Pointe North High School, also opened his one-man show.

And last but not least was the premiere of a private photography show featuring the work of three prominent area photographers: Fine, Helzer and Hitz.

“Our Rivers, Our Lakes” runs through Sept. 25.

The Grosse Pointe Art Center is located at 16900 Kercheval Ave., Grosse Pointe 48230. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 6 p.m.  More information is available at the website.
