The Cooperative Nursery at Christ Church is enrolling 3- and 4-year-old students for Fall 2010. To qualify, children must be age 3 or 4 by Dec. 1, 2010. ("Young 5's" also are welcome.) The nursery school, which has been in operation for nearly 50 years, has four certified teachers. Parents take turns working in the classroom. Grosse Pointe Academy hosts Montessori night
Families interested in the benefits of a Montessori education will be able to learn more and personally experience the Montessori educational approach during Montessori Night at The Grosse Pointe Academy on Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. This event is being held in conjunction with Montessori Awareness Week Feb. 22-26, a nationwide celebration of the Montessori method's child-centered, individualized approach to education.

Academy sixth-grader wins geography bee
Isabella Gierlinger, a sixth grade student at The Grosse Pointe Academy, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. Sixth grader Alexander Minanov was the runner-up. The school-level bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 22nd annual National Geographic Bee. The bee is sponsored by the National Geographic Society.

Miss Conroy’s last class
The founding kindergarten teacher at St. Paul on the Lake, Sharon Conroy, is retiring after 40 years at the Catholic school in the Farms. “The children have come to me at a certain point in their development,” she says, “and I’ve had the privilege to bring them up to the next point.”

University Liggett students honored in Lions Club peace poster contest
Three University Liggett School Middle School students were honored by the Grosse Pointe Lions for their entries in the Lions International Peace Poster Contest.
First place went to Izzy Sakelaris, who received a certificate and $75. Her poster will be sent to the district level for review and possible inclusion in the international competition.
Noelle Perry and Nicole Rosenberg each received certificates and $50 and $25, respectively.

University Liggett School students collect honors
University Liggett School student Madison Jerome of Grosse Pointe Woods is the 2009-10 recipient of the Nicole Marie Shammas Memorial Scholarship at University Liggett School. She will enter sixth grade in the fall.
She joins Nicole Rosenberg, Natalie Caramagno and Sarah Edmonds, whose Shammas Scholarships have been renewed for the upcoming school year.
