Kerby Elementary School at a glance

The construction of the “new” Kerby Elementary School was completed in the fall of 1951, though the first unit of the school had already been occupied for at least two years. The school, located at 285 Kerby Rd. in the Farms, currently has 345 students enrolled from kindergarten through fifth grade.

The “old” Kerby Elementary School, once located on the current site of the Grosse Pointe Farms city offices, was one of the six schools that made up the original Grosse Pointe Public School System – then known as Rural Agricultural School District #1 – in the early 1920’s. It was sold to the city in 1980.

“What sets Kerby apart is our staff and our students,” said Maureen Bur, who is in her sixth year as principal. “It’s a group of staff, students, and parents, and even community volunteers that work together that make the richest possible learning experience for kids.”

The school was named after John Kerby, a board of education member who served from 1922-26. But the school had replaced the “old” Kerby School, which served the community since the beginning of the century. It has been said, then, that the school was originally named after the Kerby family.

Kerby Elementary is a State of Michigan and National Blue Ribbon Exemplary School.
