Last days of summer on Lake St. Clair

Pride of Michigan, an 80-foot retired Naval vessel now used for research and training, was spotted among the recreational boats on Lake St. Clair Sunday (Aug. 29). The Lake was busy this weekend as boaters took advantage of blue skies, warm temperatures and fair winds in the final days of summer. Photo by George Young.

The start of summer's third act

As another July slips into the rear-view mirror, it seems a good time to look at a particularly spectacular exit. Carolyn Ugval, a member of the Grosse Pointe Camera Club, captured this sunset image last Friday (July 30) from Pier Park in the Farms.

Never too old

Helen Osborne of Grosse Pointe Woods – who freely admits to being 89-going-on-90 – turned out fully equipped for the first concert at the War Memorial. We say more power to her. Photo by Larry Peplin.

The bombs bursting in air

Carolyn Ugval captured a moment from the fireworks display Sunday night (July 3) in Grosse Pointe Farms. The evening was warm and perfect, part of a perfect-weather weekend for a holiday –  as long as you like it hot.

On the lookout for Huggy Bear

It could be argued that collecting classic cars is a hobby aimed at recapturing one's youth. (Ask anyone left holding the keys to a classic Packard when the Baby Boomers decided they all wanted '65 Mustangs.) Natural bridge

Wednesday's (June 16) winds gusted to close to 30 miles per hour and brought enough force to take down some branches here and there. This fallen bough at Kercheval and Fisher made a natural bridge (for squirrels) before being cleaned up by crews. Photo by C. Zientek.

Park crew

Grosse Pointe City resident and frequent GP Snapshot contributor George Young found this happy crew perched on the stump of an ash tree at Neff Park in the City.

Gate and roses

No, it's not a courtyard in Europe. The scene above was captured in our own Grosse Pointe Park by City resident Ted Fines. It's a gate on Kercheval leading into the yard of a home on Three Mile.

Ugly ducklings on an outing

A DNR officer in charge of managing problem bird populations once told us he found swans, frankly, terrifying. Up close, that enormous wingspan and take-no-prisoners attitude doesn't look anything like grace and beauty. To be sure, this pair announced their approach with hisses, but let us get close enough to get a picture of their new brood, grazing for lunch near the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club.
