Grosse Pointe Art Center plans
photography show, black-tie auction

The Grosse Pointe Art Center has a number of activities scheduled for October. They include:

"Children of Hope," an exhibit of photos taken in August by 13 children from the Rosa Parks Youth Program at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. They were all provided with brand new digital cameras to use, thanks to a grant from Target Corp., and several local donors. During that week, they took over 4,000 pictures.  read more...

The other kind of football
is a proud Grosse Pointe tradition

There's more than one fall sport played around here, as Isa Stoller, above, could tell you. Isa, the daughter of Michael Stoller of Grosse Pointe Woods, plays for Newcastle, in the 6-7-year-olds division of the Grosse Pointe Soccer Association. Photo by her father.

School board approves contracts
by 6-1, sets tax levy for 2010-11

An action for approval of three executive contracts turned into a contentious discussion at this week’s Grosse Pointe Board of Education meeting, ending in 6-to-1 approval.

Board member Tom Jakubiec objected to the structure of the contracts, which mimic the teachers’, approved last spring; their new agreement with the board links salaries to fund equity. If equity – the district’s cash on hand – falls below 10 percent of the total budget (roughly $10 million), they could see pay cuts. If it rises, the opposite would occur. read more...

Comment: How can this race
be over if I'm still running?

As the Republican candidate for U.S. Congress in the 13th District, I have grown increasingly frustrated by the media’s coverage of my campaign. They appear to be having a good time crowning my opponent, Democrat Hansen Clarke, as the “winner” in our district. I find that amazing as more endorsements from the citizens continue to come in and my calendar tells me that it is September, not November 2nd. Didn’t we learn anything from ‘Dewey Beats Truman’?  read more...

The candidates for Wayne County Commissioner, District 1, kicked off the League of Women Voters series of candidate forums last week in the Grosse Pointe Woods council chambers. Democratic incumbent Tim Killeen and his Republican challenger Robert Sheehy kept the tone polite, both agreeing that mass transit in the area must be improved.
