Lake Shore resurfacing shows progress

The repaving of a portion of Lake Shore Road from Fisher to Warner was coming to its conclusion Monday afternoon, according to Gary Randall, above right, senior construction observer for the project, who stands at the corner of McKinley and Lake Shore facing the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church as pavers tamp down the asphalt. Repaving the segment from Fisher to Warner is being handled by Barrett Paving Co. with money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The Village's Kroger is taking shape

Progress continues on the new Kroger in the Village, giving us a good idea of what the store will look like when construction is completed. Grosse Pointe City Manager Peter Dame said the city is pleased with the progress so far. "We have had to close down access to Notre Dame for a long period," he said, "but people seem to be coping well." Dame said the city will open the sidewalk on Kercheval as soon as possible. Judging from the photo above, we guess it won't be long. Photo by George Young.

Last days of summer on Lake St. Clair

Pride of Michigan, an 80-foot retired Naval vessel now used for research and training, was spotted among the recreational boats on Lake St. Clair Sunday (Aug. 29). The Lake was busy this weekend as boaters took advantage of blue skies, warm temperatures and fair winds in the final days of summer. Photo by George Young.

erects playscape at Maire Elementary

A brand-new playscape was installed at Maire Elementary School Aug. 19-21, part of a set of playground equipment purchased by the school’s PTO. He was one of more than 70 Maire parents and teachers who volunteered over four days to install the playscape, including a 13-foot-tall climbing wall, a swing set, and several other pieces of free-standing equipment. Seventeen other parents volunteered food. The project was also helped by contributions from Bruegger’s, Einstein Bros. read more...

When shopping in Istanbul,
even the pitch is worth it

A burly man unfurled a room-size Turkish silk carpet with a snap, flipped it in the air above his head and twirled it with one hand like pizza crust. It hung suspended for a nanosecond, floated briefly as if it were a magic carpet, then settled gently, diagonally on top of dozens of others.

Buying a carpet in Turkey is a lesson in super salesmanship.

Capture the customer’s attention. Educate her about the product. Develop her desire for quality. Compliment her on her taste. Launch a gentle sales pitch. Check frequently as to how you are doing. Answer her questions. read more...
