The Grosse Pointe Village Association presents the annual Village Sidewalk Sale and Street Festival Friday and Saturday (July 30-31). The festival takes place on Kercheval Avenue between Cadieux and Neff in downtown Grosse Pointe’s Village shopping district. Barbe, a 26-year-old Park resident, has participated in a variety of political and social events over the years, including organizing work for student groups and anti-war coalitions. 12 residents join effort to solve
Grosse Pointe Shores' budget

At its June meeting, the Grosse Pointe Shores City Council sought to head off public objections to the ongoing pain of budget-making by inviting residents to join in the effort. At the July meeting, 12 interested residents formally became part of the process. 

The 12, who form the Blue Ribbon Committee, are Daniel Aitken, James Anderson, Robert Barrette, Bruce Bisballe, John Booth, Peter Dolan, Brian Garves, Robert Gesell, Quresh Khairullah, Daher Rahi, David VanEgmond and Ralph Wenskus.  read more...


Grosse Pointers made DSO concerts
at the Ford House a huge success

When the management team at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House paired with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra to sponsor a pair of summer concerts on the lawn, they hoped they would attract enough paying customers to break even.

They figured they needed to sell about 3,000 tickets for that to happen. The results are now in. More than 5,000 folks turned out on those lovely July evenings, including 1,500 who bought tickets at the gate. The DSO and the Ford House will split $70,000 in net profits, according to Ford House staff. read more...

War Memorial offers new class
for incoming kindergarteners

It's a new place filled with new people and no mommy and daddy. For many youngsters, kindergarten seems a most imposing place.

To help boys and girls ages 4-5 get over their concerns and help them make the big transition, the Grosse Pointe War Memorial presents Get Ready for Kindergarten Camp. The new program will be held from 9 a.m.-noon Aug. 9-13 at the War Memorial.

The class is timely because Grosse Pointe public schools will be offering all-day kindergarten starting in the fall. read more...

A sailor's friends bid farewell

If ever there was the perfect image of a self-made man who got joy out of life, it was Bill McCourt, whose name graced a shoe store in the Village, a building he built at the southwest corner of Kercheval and Notre Dame.

His father, Arthur, died when he was 8. His mother, Mary, had tuberculosis so Bill grew up in an orphanage, quit school as a teenager to support his mother and sister, served as a radar man in the Navy in World War II and went ashore at Iwo Jima – and took pictures. read more...
