The district hasn't elected a Republican in more than half a century, but John Hauler says his brand of common-sense government has wide appeal.

Alleged gunman in Grosse Pointe City
armed robbery reported killed in Detroit

The alleged gunman in the armed robbery of three teenage girls in April is dead, police say.

Timothy Little, 18, was killed in a Father's Day altercation during a home invasion on Bishop Street in Detroit, said James Fox, director of public safety in the City of Grosse Pointe, where the incident with the girls occurred. According to Fox and other public accounts, Little was one of several individuals discovered inside a house by the homeowner, his brother and young son. A scuffle ensued, Little stabbed the homeowner, and the homeowner's brother stabbed Little. Both died at the scene.  read more...

A slide from Monday night's PowerPoint presentations at the school board meeting shows the missing link that relieves financial uncertainty in the Grosse Pointe district.

How one Grosse Pointe public entity
found a new way, and why it matters

After a year of drama tempered with a great deal of wonkish financial analysis, the Grosse Pointe Public School System Board of Education approved a budget last night. The meeting at Parcells Middle School was sparsely attended, and while I had to duck out before the PowerPoint barrage concluded, I'll assume the clouds did not part and no heavenly beam shone down on the proceedings when the final vote was cast.

But this budget, and its cornerstone, the recently ratified contract with teachers, represents something special. If we can't wrangle a choir of angels, this column will have to do. read more...

Tom Saunders to be honored
at Music on the Plaza, Grosse Pointe

Paul Keller and Johnny Trudell will present a special tribute to the late Tom Saunders at the Music on The Plaza concert series at 7 p.m. Thursday (July 1) at the corner of Kercheval and St. Clair in the Village.

Tom Saunders’ career as a cornetist spanned six decades and transported him from his native Grosse Pointe to performances in Europe, Asia, Japan and throughout North America. He was a life-long proponent of elevating the Swing Era’s status in the jazz pantheon, and was one of its most skilled practitioners.

As a 20-year member of Tom Saunders’ Detroit Jazz All Stars, bassist and bandleader Paul Keller is uniquely qualified to pay tribute to this late, great swing legend. Also performing on the special tribute program will be trumpeter Johnny Trudell, whose big band has electrified Detroit-area audiences for more than 40 years. Tom Saunders performed read more...

In French or English, La Fête d’Eté
really was the party of the summer

Editor's note: This version of the story corrects an error brought to our attention by the reader comment below. Thanks to the reader for pointing it out.

The house is a sophisticated French-inspired manor and the occasion was the Grosse Pointe Historical Society’s annual fundraiser last week. La Fête d’Eté – “the summer party” – held last Thursday (June 24), offered the public a rare look inside 355 Lakeland Road in Grosse Pointe. The gracious hosts for the evening were Tom and Diane Schoenith, owners of the Detroit landmark, the Roostertail.

Supper was served in the tented garden accompanied by the music of an 18-piece big band orchestra. Those participating in the docent-led house tours enjoyed Jack McCormick at the Grand Piano. read more...

On the lookout for Huggy Bear

It could be argued that collecting classic cars is a hobby aimed at recapturing one's youth. (Ask anyone left holding the keys to a classic Packard when the Baby Boomers decided they all wanted '65 Mustangs.) If so, our educated guess at the owner of this 1976 Ford Gran Torino would be: a 50ish male who spent many evenings read more...

GP Woods council approves cell tower variance despite resident objections

Forty angry residents told Grosse Pointe Woods City Council Monday (June 21) they oppose the city letting AT&T build a 100-foot-tall cell phone tower in their neighborhood. They left unhappy with the 5-2 vote in favor of allowing the structure.

AT&T Mobility of Brighton had requested two variances to install a 100-foot stealth flagpole-style support structure with antennas concealed inside on City property at 1200 Parkway Drive. The variances were required for an 88-foot setback from residential lots and for a 100-foot setback from nonresidential (DPW building). read more...
