South drug sweep turns up little,
but police say message was sent

More than two dozen police officers and at least 10 dogs sniffed and searched their way through Grosse Pointe South High School on Wednesday morning (April 28), looking for illegal drugs while students stayed locked down in classrooms. They found only a small amount of marijuana and paraphernalia, but Farms public safety director Dan Jensen called the operation a success just the same. read more...

Grosse Pointe Theatre is a busy stage in May, with its final production of the season, a workshop and scholarship auditions.

"Grease" opens Sunday, May 9, with a 2 p.m. matinee. School board delivers the blow:
81 layoffs needed, including 29 teachers

Teachers dressed in green Grosse Pointe Education Association shirts packed North High School’s library for another round of disappointment. Eighty-one disappointments, to be exact.

According to Christian Fenton, assistant superintendent for business and support services for Grosse Pointe Public Schools, the budget planning for 2010-11 calls for approximately 81 staff layoffs. These layoffs include 29 teachers, 22 teacher/classroom assistants, 12 clerical/secretarial staff, eight custodians, 6.2 non-instructional supervisors and 3.6 paraprofessional staff. read more...

All the office of the Michigan Episcopal bishop – The Rt. Rev. Wendell N. Gibbs Jr. – would say was that an unspecified “serious allegation” had been lodged against the Rev. Brad Whitaker and that he was to have no interaction with church members, nor speak on the matter nor enter the church while an investigation is conducted. read more...

The Grosse Pointe Village Association presents the 24th annual Paint the Window Contest May 8 (Saturday) from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event is open to all Grosse Pointe children, grades K-5. Nearly 300 student artists will test their skills in this popular event that gives them the opportunity to create their own masterpieces on Village merchants’ storefront windows. Woods council accepts resignation
of city administrator Wollenweber

Mark Wollenweber is leaving his position as Grosse Pointe Woods city administrator, but he'll be staying awhile longer.

The council accepted Wollenweber's resignation at its Monday meeting (April 19), but also improved a 90-day consulting contract to retain his help in reorganizing city administration and assistance in the city's ongoing labor negotiations. His last day as a full-time employee is June 30. read more...


Spring Benefit will fund scholarships,
thanks to GP South Mother's Club

The Mothers’ Club of Grosse Pointe South High School joins with South students to celebrate Springtime in Paris at the Spring Benefit Luncheon and Fashion Show, Tuesday, April 27, from noon-3:00 p.m., in the South gymnasium.

The show supports classroom enrichment, college scholarship and historic preservation projects. Last year, the Mothers’ Club awarded scholarships to 53 graduating seniors in the amount of $64,000 as a result of their fundraising efforts. read more...


Barnes Early Childhood Ctr. at a glance

Barnes Early Childhood Center opened in September 1999 when school officials decided there were enough preschool programs across the district to justify combining them into one building. Two programs are hosted at Barnes: a preschool/daycare program and a program for children with special needs. Together they serve 80 to 100 students per year. read more...


Farms council fills vacancy
with veteran, asks for tradition to stand

The Grosse Pointe Farms City Council appointed a replacement to complete the late councilman Douglas Roby’s term Monday evening. The council also considered approving the transfer of the liquor license for Lucy's Restaurant and Bar to the new owners.

Eight residents submitted their resumés and letters of interest for the council vacancy, but council chose Martin West, a former member who served one term, from 1997 to 2001. read more...
