Council recall effort in Woods fails;
organizers fall short on signatures

It's official: There will be no recall question on the ballot this fall in Grosse Pointe Woods.

Woods resident Nancy Hames said she is abandoning her effort to recall Arthur Bryant and Joseph Sucher, the two newest members of the Woods city council, after failing to gather enough signatures to place the question on the ballot. Hames began her campaign in May, after Bryant and Sucher voted with the majority to raise the city's millage rate. The Woods, like most municipalities in Michigan, faced budget shortfalls due to declining property values and tax receipts.  read more...

No trip to Baltimore is complete without a stop at Camden Yards. Cy and Kal Nardone came to see their hometown favorites take on the Orioles.

Column: Maryland suits for a
Michigan family's vacation

If you can combine a beach, family fun and baseball game, I call that a pretty good vacation. Last summer, we were able to pull this off.

Last July, our family visited the Baltimore/Chesapeake Bay area. I am the trip planner, and my job is to make it enjoyable for the five of us (my wife and our three children, all age 9 in a blended family.) At first, my plan for a cottage on the beach didn't work out (we arrived and it was awful), but as we drove up the coast, we found the quaint town of Chesapeake Beach. read more...

Devin Scillian, WDIV anchor and Park resident, performs with his band, Arizona Son.

Scillian plays many instruments
in the concert of his busy life

WDIV-TV anchor and Grosse Pointe Park resident Devin Scillian has been called "Renaissance man" so often he's probably tired of hearing it. Still, it's hard not to be impressed by his resume -- journalist, musician, writer, husband and father. GrossePointeToday.com caught up with Scillian before his gig July 29 at the War Memorial; he and his band, Arizona Son, played as part of the summer music festival. read more...

The Grosse Pointe Dog Wash is under new ownership, but still at 19583 Mack Avenue, in the Woods.

Do-it-yourself dog washing
is one Pointer's business

Everyone who has ever owned a dog knows it takes a lot of work to keep the beast clean. That’s where The Grosse Pointe Dog Wash would be interested in helping. The business, which has been open for just over a year, is located in the Woods and offers dog bathing services Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Owner Lois Baker bought the store only two and a half weeks ago. Since dog washing shops are new to most people, we sat down with Baker for a look at do-it-yourself (in someone else's place) dog bathing.

It was blowing pretty good from SSW with a threat of showers as the Grosse Pointe Boat Club racers started their weekly race on Wednesday (July 14). It promised to be a fast race. The fleet went marks to port, which meant a couple of reaches and a run along the channel before a close reach back to the dock.

The weather threatened, but the squall went by a few miles to the North.  St Clair Shores weather station showed SSW 7-10 at 7 p.m., WNW 10-20 at 7:40 p.m. and S 1-6 at 8 p.m. The racers got some of the gusts, and the promise of a fast race was kept as they finished just before the breeze lightened.

Jim Miller nailed the first start and led until the end of the run when Don Healy got some boat speed read more...

once blasted 'em out of Farms fields
